Jefferson Corridor

Map
Jefferson Corridor, in South Los Angeles near West Adams, became a "LANI neighborhood" in 1994. Many vibrant sites dot the corridor, such as the famous Harold & Bell's Creole restaurant, Leslie Shaw Park, Vassie D. Wright Library, and churches and schools. As the community seeks to increase commercial business density and enhance the pedestrian experience, it is challenged by the 15,000 cars travelling through the neighborhood daily, often at high speeds. These cars are currently a safety and health hazard to children and other residents, but also represent an opportunity to attract more visitors to Jefferson Corridor.

LANI Sustainable Organization

In accordance with LANI's program design, the Jefferson Corridor Recognized Community Organization (RCO) merged with the Jefferson Park Improvement Project (JPIP), an existing community nonprofit. LANI continues to provide some support services to Jefferson Corridor, but most of their activities are independent from LANI.

Additional Benefits of LANI Program

  • $60,000 in private funds towards park improvements
  • $500,000 in improvements to properties abutting the Art Park
  • 30 new jobs in immediate vicinity of Art Park
  • 8 new businesses (most in previously vacant facilities) attracted to the immediate vicinity of the park

LANI's emphasis on public/private partnerships led to the approval and installation of pedestrian light fixtures attached to existing poles - the first in Los Angeles!

As a result of LANI and the RCO's efforts in Jefferson Park, the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) Mid-City Recovery Team now works closely with JPIP, providing support and supportive services.

A Business Improvement District (BID) was established in 1999.
