LANI's projects immediately improve the sidewalk environment, building safe, pleasant walkable neighborhood main streets. They are also a catalyst for economic revitalization, attracting businesses, customers, jobs and additional pubic and private investment. LANI has leveraged $15 million in grant funds with over $30 million in additional neighborhood investments since 1994.

Examples of catalytic projects include:

  • $60,000 in private funds towards park improvements
  • $500,000 in improvements to properties abutting the Art Park
  • 30 new jobs in immediate vicinity of Art Park
  • 8 new businesses (most in previously vacant facilities) attracted to the immediate vicinity of the park

With a strategic seed investment of just $6,000 in LANI funds and the support of former Mayor Riordan and Councilman Nate Holden, the Jefferson Corridor RCO/Jefferson Park Improvement Project attracted a $40,000 donation from Union Bank of California! The funds went towards construction of an entry monument designed to demonstrate community pride by highlighting the entrance to Jefferson Park.

In 1998, the LANI community group in the BLQ engaged local school children in responding to the neighborhood's chronic sidewalk trash problem. As a result, the sidewalk is now lined with beautiful decorative trash recepticles which reflect the culture and character of the neighborhood, while beautifying the sidewalk and reducing litter. Each receptacle is adorned with artwork from students at 5 local schools. This project was a catalyst for building community capacity, creating partnerships that will continue to strengthen and improve this diverse neighborhood.
