Urban Greening: Western Gage Tot Lot
Completion of this vibrant new park turned an abandoned corner median into an attractive realization of the community’s vision and added opportunities for increased physical and recreational activities. In this high-need, park-poor neighborhood, this green space for active play will support a culture of healthy habits for children and families. The Western/Gage neighborhood has waited over a decade for this park, and we are delighted to have helped bring it to fruition.
LANI designed and implemented a community engagement plan which generated and affirmed community enthusiasm about the project, and we provided project management for permitting and construction of the park, with the majority of construction happening safely under COVID19 safety protocols, including: demolition and grading of the vacant lot; installation of custom-designed rubberized play surface and shaded play structure; landscaping including trees, shrubs, lawn and irrigation; and installation of lighting, seating, and security fencing.

Transportation: Step by Step West Whittier-Los Nietos Community Pedestrian Plan
LANI partnered with Los Angeles County Department of Public Health on this ambitious 3-year effort to improve safety for people walking and to support healthy, active lifestyles. The project involved extensive community outreach and sharing of educational materials. We worked closely with the project team to provide vision and hyper-local input on needs and related solutions through targeted outreach efforts, including community walk audits and bicycle/pedestrian counts, as well as extensive outreach and engagement to local area schools.
We developed consistent, bi-lingual outreach materials that provided information in a concise way with eye catching design that were specifically tailored for each community. The broad and deep outreach that was achieved throughout the project lead to overwhelming community support for the completed pedestrian plan which was approved by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on May 28, 2019.

Neighborhood Improvements: Tree Trimming and Sidewalk Repair & Replacement
Typically in partnership with City Council District offices, LANI trims trees and repairs uneven or broken sidewalks, in residential neighborhoods and commercial corridors, to make neighborhoods safer and more enjoyable.
Every neighborhood should have ample, safe sidewalks in good condition to encourage walking, protect pedestrians, and connect residents with public transportation and local businesses. And proper tree maintenance is essential for public safety and tree health; without professional pruning, limbs can block street lights and signs, risk falling, or interfere with power lines. Trimming also ensures that air and light can circulate among the branches for healthy, balanced growth so that our urban trees enhance our neighborhoods for many years to come. Although too often overlooked as a “small” improvement, safe, clean sidewalks and well cared for trees vastly improve neighborhoods and help to attract visitors and investment.
